Evander Holyfield



Holyfield, the three-time world heavyweight boxing champion was born in Atmore, Alabama. The youngest of nine siblings, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia at the age of four. He began his boxing career at the age of eighta the Warren Boys Club in southeast Atlanta. It was there that Carter Morgan, his late coach, impressed upon him that he could be the world heavyweight champion given his vision, strong desire, excellent work ethic and steadfast perseverance. Holyfield dilligent pursuit of his craft was evident at an early age. He won the Boys Club Boxing Tournament at the age of eight. At the age of eleven, he qualified to compete in his first Junior Olympics. By the age of sixteen, he weighed 139 lbs. and became the Southeastern Regional Champion, winning this tournament and the Best Boxer Award. When he was nineteen, he represented the U.S. in the Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela, where he won a silver medal. The following year, he was the National Golden Gloves Champion and won a bronze medal representing the U.S. int he 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles. Holyfield made his profesional debut in November 1984 defeating Lionel Bryams. He won his first Cruiserweight title in 1986 against Dwight M. Qwai and became the first boxer of the 1984 Olympic Games to win a championship title. Over the next three years, Holyfield earned his place in the history books, by becoming the only boxer to become an undefeated, undiputed Cruiserweight Champion. Even today, all Cruiserweight championship belts bear his likeness as a lasting tribute to his legacy. Holyfield has recieved numerous awards for his talents; most recent were the WBA Fighter of the Year Award for his fight against Michael Moore, and the Boxer of the Year Award from the International Boxing Associatoin. This was his second consecutive year for receiving both awards.
