Kerri Strug
Strug performed the last vault on an injured ankle during the 1996 Olympic
Games and helped the U.S. team clinch the first ever Olympic Gold Medal
in the team competition. Strug's courageous performance on vault led to her
winning the Olympic Spirit Award, which was also presented to Carl Lewis
at the 1996 Olympic Games.
Strug is a 1992 Olympic Bronze Medalist and three-time World
Championships Medalist. She has been a member of five World
Championships teams since 1991. Strug won the 1996 McDonald's
American Cup and has been a senior member on the national team since
1991. She is also the 1995 U.S. Olympic Festival Champion. At 14, Strug
was the youngest American representing the U.S. at the 1992 Olympic
Games, and she became one of the oldest members of the 1996 Olympic
Team at age 18.
Strug and her teammates were featured on the Wheaties cereal box after
winning the gold medal. Strug and her teammates have appeared on many
television talk shows. She has appeared on the cover of Time and People
Magazine, along with appearing on "Beverly Hills 90210," "Saturday Night
Live" and "Touched By An Angel".
Strug is a spokesperson for the Children's Miracle Network and Special
Olympics. She was featured as one of the 10 most fascinating people in
1996 on the Barbara Walters Special. She is also involved with DARE,
Pediatric AIDS, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Childhelp and NO-ADDiction.
Recently she accepted the Reebok/Lady Foot Locker Giving Back Award
presented by the Women's Sports Foundation.
Kerri has participated in two professional gymnastics tours including MGM/
Ice Capades and the 1996 World Gymnastics Tour.
Kerri's father is a heart surgeon in Tucson, Ariz. Strug attends Stanford
University. She would like to study communications. Her older brother,
Kevin, and sister, Lisa, also competed in gymnastics.
