Mira Sorvino Mira Sorvino is not your typical Hollywood actress. She is a 1990 Harvard University graduate of East Asian Studies, and she learned to speak fluent Mandarin while spending a year abroad in Beijing. Yet with this nerdy background, Mira landed an Oscar-winning, supporting role as an airy call girl in Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite. Mira later starred as the half-wit but sweet blonde Romy White in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion with Lisa Kudro. After graduation from Harvard, Mira moved to New York where she pursued a professional acting career. Like most would-be actresses, she waitressed while trying to crack her way in. Mira also worked as a production assistant for Robert de Niro’s film company Tribeca. Then in 1992, she secured a job in Rob Weiss’s Indie film Amongst Friends as a third assistant director. As the production progressed, Mira was promoted to various positions including casting director and assistant producer before she finally captured the film’s female lead. Her debut performance earned strong notice as various film-festival screenings. Director Whit Stillman took notice to Mira’s screen presence and cast her as a translator in Barcelona (1994). Robert Redford directed her in Quiz Show (1994), Mira’s first studio film, where she played the brainy wife of Rob Morrow. Mira then out-performed her costars as the kindhearted prostitute Linda Ash in Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite (1995). She later became Matt Dillon’s love interest in Beautiful Girls (1996) and Marilyn Monroe in Norma Jean and Marilyn (1996) with Ashley Judd. in 1997, Mira starred opposite Lisa Kudrow in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion also with Janeane Garofalo. As an entomologist, Mira became the hunted in the horror film Mimic (1997). Then in 1998, Mira’s salary reached $2 million as she starred opposite Chinese superstar Chow Yun Fat in the Replacement Killers.
