Picabo Street

Street, Picabo (1971- ), American Alpine skier, who won the gold medal in the women's super-giant-slalom race at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. She also won the 1995 and 1996 downhill season titles on the World Cup circuit, the highest level of international ski racing. Born in Triumph, Idaho, Street began skiing at an early age. After achieving good results in junior competitions, she joined the United States ski team in 1988. She skied with inconsistent results for several years, but in 1993 she won the silver medal in the combined competition at the Alpine skiing world championships in Morioka, Japan. That year she also won the super-giant-slalom race at the U.S. national championships in Winter Park, Colorado. In the 1993-94 season Street continued to improve, winning the silver medal in the downhill at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. In the 1994-95 season she registered six World Cup downhill victories and won the World Cup downhill season title. She was the first American—man or woman—to win a downhill season title. The following year Street continued her success, winning the downhill at the 1996 world championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain, and repeating as World Cup downhill season champion. Early in the 1996-97 season, Street crashed during a training run at Vail, Colorado, and tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee. She missed the entire season while rehabilitating from this serious injury, but returned for a dramatic victory in the super giant slalom at the 1998 Olympics. Shortly after the Olympics she suffered another serious crash at Crans Montana, Switzerland, breaking her left leg and tearing the ACL in her right knee.
