Summer Sanders
Summer Sanders won four medals (two gold, one silver, one bronze) swimming at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. She now hosts Nickelodeon's game show Figure It Out, and co-hosts NBC's NBA Inside Stuff with Ahmad Rashad. Summer and her husband, former U.S. Olympic swimmer Mark Henderson, live in New York City.
Summer was born on October 13, 1972; she grew up in northern California. She competed successfully as a swimmer from an early age, and when she was fifteen, she missed qualifying for the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the 200 meter individual medley by 0.27 seconds.
In 1990, Summer matriculated at Stanford University, where she majored in communications and twice earned NCAA Swimmer of the Year. At both the 1991 and 1992 NCAA Championships, she finished first in the 200 yard butterfly, the 200 yard individual medley, and the 400 yard individual medley. Stanford won the NCAA national championship in 1992.
Summer qualified for the 1992 Olympics in four individual events. At Barcelona, Summer finished sixth in the 100m butterfly, won the silver in the 200m individual medley, took the bronze in the 400m IM, and brought home the gold in the 200m butterfly. In addition, Summer earned a gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay by swimming with the U.S. team in the preliminaries.
Summer retired from swimming in 1993, and began her career as a television personality. In 1994, she was a commentator for CBS at the NCAA Championships and the U.S. National Championships. She also co-hosted the MTV show Sandblast during its first season.
In 1995, she decided to make a comeback, setting her sights on the 1996 Olympics that would be held in Atlanta. Unfortunately, she failed to qualify, and instead served as an announcer for NBC. Summer's boyfriend at the time, Mark Henderson, won a gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay, and then proposed to Summer at the closing ceremonies. They married on July 4, 1997.
Since her 1996 retirement from swimming, Summer has translated her intelligence and charisma into a successful television broadcasting career. She was on Lifetime's WNBA broadcasting team during the league's first season, and, as mentioned above, currently hosts Nickelodeon's game show Figure It Out, and co-hosts NBC's NBA Inside Stuff.
Summer has recently written a book called Champions Are Raised, Not Born. The book draws on her childhood experiences in competitive sports, providing advice to parents about the importance, in a child's early athletic competition, of just having fun.
